Artist Statement: After many years painting signs and producing a lot of abstract paintings I grew somewhat weary to the notion of the self-referential. I have and will most likely always be engaged in the relationship of color as it relates to the plastic nature of painting. Initially I thought of "going outside to paint" as being like fishing. If i had the right pole and tackle I would stand a better chance of catching a fish. In painting that first came fundamentally in the nature of a strict limited palette, which was foreign to me, but which I embraced. Working small and quickly allows for the limited time of a scene to be approximated. I am not overly attached to synthesizing the "reality" of what is seen, but rather to "see" what is there, and how the color operates. With a limited harmonious palette, the endeavor becomes more intuitive. I am inclined towards the concern of beauty, but not overly attached to what is merely pretty, as I am also invested in having a unique experience each time I go out to paint. Plein air painting reduces the importance of my concerns in favor of what-is-there, just looking, recording, seeing, reductive as it seems to what is available, just as it is.
